Clarice and Dominic think that Mr Wynter was murdered because he knew some secret from someone. Dominic tells her that the Boscombes were uneasy when he told them about the vicar's death. Clarice thinks that the only secret they could be concerned about was either their children or their marriage. By looking through the records, she discovers that John and Genevieve Boscombe are not married. When Dominic goes to see him, the man admits that it is true, and the vicar was trying to help him. The problem is that his first wife, who he hints is in the village, won't accept a divorce.
Dominic also learns from a neighbour, Sybil Towers, that in her youth she had a love affair and had a baby daughter that she had to give away. Sybil feels very ashamed and had wanted to tell Mr Wynter but she was afraid. Dominic tries to calm her down, saying that God forgives everything. Then Dominic starts thinking, and he suspects that Sir Peter's father may be the man Sybil had the affair with. So he goes to visit Sir Peter, and the man denies the accusation. Then he tells him his own secret. Sir Peter is not Sir Thomas's real son. He was an orphan and when Sir Thomas lost his wife, he adopted Peter. He also says that Sir Thomas was sterile and couldn't have children.
Clarice receives the visit of another neighbour, Mrs Paget, who tells her that a young boy saw a woman running away from the vicarage, but he couldn't identify her. Then Genevieve confesses to the crime, and when Dominic visits her husband John, he says that he killed the vicar. They were afraid that the real murderer could harm the other. The actual murderer was John's wife, who Clarice and Dominic discover is Mrs Marybelle Paget. When the truth is found out, Mrs Paget almost kills Clarice, when she grabs her hand and they both fall into the frozen lake. Dominic gets Clarice out of the lake, and she is sved, but Mrs Paget dies.
